Puligny-Montrachet 2017, Francois Carillon
The 2017 vintage is one which took many of us by surprise. Initial concerns about it being too light and fresh were dispelled by the consistent quality, ripeness and immediate pleasure on offer. If you book a ticket to the opera and find out you are attending the ballet this has a discombobulating effect. And 2017 is a ballet not an opera like 2016, 2018 or 2019. This 2017 Puligny from the venerable house of Francois Carillon featured in a three bottle comparison and was going through a quiet period - unlike most other 2017s. Quiet on the nose it offered faint floral notes, lemon zest and a touch of chalk. Pleasant and fine lemon the palate there was trademark minerality and decent length. I did, however, miss any excitement or joie de vivre in this wine which had travelled all of 300m from the producer to my Puligny cellar. Will need to check other 2017s.
