Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru “Les Saint Georges” 2012, Thibault Liger-Belair

Whilst 2012s have been showing well I was worried that opening this now was a year or two early. Producers of “Les Saint Georges” have been lobbying to have the vineyard upgraded to Grand Cru status for years. I imagine local politics will stop it happening as domaines who do not own vines in that lieu-dit will oppose their neighbours getting a Grand Cru when they don’t. Yep, that’s classic Côte d’Or squabbling for you. Rich, dense red with a touch of brick on the rim. Vanilla, black currant, raspberry, cherry, ripe. Real thrill factor. Floral, sweet, soft, feminine. Evolves to a smoky/toasty note and roast aubergine. Sensational on the palate with an amazing texture, delectable raspberry-dominated berry flavour, supple and very, very long. Ella Fitzgerald’s voice turned into pinot noir. Scores 95-97/100. More like a Musigny than a NSG.
