Pommard 2017, Cyrot-Buthiau

Tasted at the annual Corney & Barrow en primeur Burgundy tasting there were two things that I liked about this wine. Firstly, and most importantly, this is a proper Pommard. Secondly, at £24.58 per bottle in bond, it is very solid value. The first nose is characteristic of the 2017 vintage: red apple, saffron, blood oramge. Finishes on an interesting pomegranate molasses aroma which reminds me of Flaubert’s novel Salammbô. For the record, pomegranate molasses is very vibrant and whilst syrupy in texture is not cloyingly sweet. This wine announces itself as a proper old-fashioned Pommard and finishes with a solid back end. Certainly a keeper and worth buying a case.
