Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru "La Romanée" 2010, Domaine des Varoilles

The Imbibers' Guide team first tasted here in 2012 after I tried their 2010s en primeur at the Corney & Barrow tasting in the Tower of London. We went back in 2015 and 2017 since people really enjoyed the wines. This 2010 Gevrey 1er Cru was a real gem. Initial nose of toasted oak, Islay peat, blackberry and roast plum. There is a phenomenal range of primary, secondary and tertiary aromas! Sea salt, briny anchovy, cherry puree, tamarind paste and ends on ripe blueberry. A stunning and superb pinot nose. Medium plus acidity on the palate, cherry, raspberry dominant flavours. Good, quite firm tannins, medium plus body, structured. Plum flavour on the finish. Impactful and appetizing. This Gevrey 1er Cru is glorious now and could definitely age well for three more years. Scores 89/100.
