Viré-Clessé 2014, Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon

In true Burgundian style, the Comtes Lafon website gives no information about the Mâconnais vineyards also owned by Domaine Comtes Lafon. This has been a hugely successful venture which combines inexpensive vineyards with top-notch chardonnay wine-making skills. The Viré-Clessé vineyard, created in 1999, is at a fairly high elevation and covers 390 hectares. This 2014 edition has a full on, intense lemongrass nose with a significant dose of Cornish rock salt. Its an incredibly saline, limestone nose. Medium-bodied, medium plus acidity (surprising for a Viré-Clessé but 2014 was a fresh vintage). Short in length. Good minerality. A touch too bright to be consumed solo. Perfect for goat's cheese or quiche. Scores 68-70/100 reflecting the wine's characteristics, vintage and terroir quality.
