Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "Les Caillerets" 2016, Domaine de Montille

The Domaine de Montille has since 2012 been co-managed alongside the Château de Puligny which together have 30 hectares of vineyards. The Domaine wines are vinified in a cuverie in Meursault and the Château wines are vinified in Puligny. Les Caillerets also known as Le Cailleret abuts the Montrachet vineyard and prices typically reflect this location. This Puligny 1er Cru is reflective of the slightly oddball 2016 vintage. The initial aromas are of leeks, green apple, flint and a touch of volatile acidity. This is more reminiscent of Pouilly-Fumé than Puligny-Montrachet! Lime, lemongrass, surprisingly rich but still quartzy on the palate. Despite the odd nose the decent fruit body points to a good future potential. Scores 77-83/100 which is a strong performance for 2016. The catch is the price: £1,020 for a case of 12 bottles in bond which is £104.60 per bottle retail.
