Meursault Rouge 2009, Thierry & Pascale Matrot

Domaine Matrot in Meursault, also referred to as Domaine Thierry et Pascale Matrot, has an enviable reputation and is among the top 20 and possibly top 10 Meursault domaines in terms of vineyard holdings and quality of wine. This is demonstrated by their willingness to produce that rare bird, a red Meursault. Starting with a rich, thick red colour on the nose this Meursault rouge from the ripe 2009 vintage does not disappoint. Plums, black cherry, vanilla, ripe and summer-like. Even with a hint of strawberries and dates! The structure is broad on the front palate and then tapers off as layers of blackberry and cherry fruit wash over the tongue. There's a hot finish and I find the overall luscious style more akin to a Vosne than a Volnay. A wine to be found in the velvet department. Score 66/100  reflecting the wine's characteristics, vintage and terroir quality. It is the best Meursault rouge by far that I have ever tried!
