Echezeaux Grand Cru 2001, Mongeard-Mugneret

For many years we visited this domaine in Vosne and sat round their lovely circular glass table sipping wines from Marsannay to Grands-Echezeaux. But we stopped visiting ten years ago. Ahh, fickle wine buyers... Tasted blind this wine was magnificent from start to finish. A gorgeous ripe, mature pinot nose. Plums, black cherries and vanilla. Ripe, glorious berry fruit. A full nose, as so often pinot dosn't offer a full nose. Dates, coffee after two hours in the glass. Red leather. Vintage port. Sheer pleasure. Words can not explain how wonderful this wine is on the nose; it requires sighs, hand gestures, facial expressions and group hugs. And the palate continues in the same vein: magnificent  plum, black cherries, dates. Very ripe and mature. A phenomenal velvet texture. Please never let this wine-tasting end! Truly magnificent. Scores 29/30 for an Echezeaux.(For the record, I guessed this as a Vosne premier cru 2002. The rich texture and ripeness is the give-away for Vosne). Finalement, merci Peter!
