Clos Saint Denis Grand Cru 2004, Domaine Bertagna
Fourth wine in a blind tasting, this grand cru from the Morey appellation has a good red/plum colour. The first nose is reminiscent of a Buckinghamshire hay loft. There are dried mushrooms in there. It's a bit dusty. But it's also good ripe strawberry and black cherry notes. The aromas continue to evolve towards coffee, limestone and possibly mint. A fascinating range of aromas which is unstable and contradictory. This Clos Saint Denis grand cru is well integrated on the palate. Ripe/fresh cherry, plum and raspberry fruit. It is long and multi-layered. Medium acidity and medium tannin with a dry tea-like finish. An excellent result from the very challenging "millésime de vigneron" which required very skilfull wine-making to achieve good results. Suggests all 2004 grands crus should be drunk up. Compare with tasting notes for another Clos Saint Denis 2004 and a Clos de Bèze 2004. Scores 23/30 for a Clos Saint Denis.
