Chambolle-Musigny "Les Veroilles" 2008, Bruno Clair

This is a classic Chambolle -- it should stand out as a clear example in a blind tasting. A rich dark cherry colour announces aromas of aniseed, shiitake, cedar, ripe cherry. This is a fully ripe wine in a vintage which is generally more savoury and spicy. The vines were planted between 1989 and 1994 so still rather young. Bruno Clair thinned out the bunches to six per vine instead of the normal eight per vine in 2008 to ensure the grapes achieved full maturity. This work in the vineyards and sacrifice of yield comes out clearly in this ripe, silky Chambolle. Medium plus body, medium minus acidity and medium tannins. Has a savoury edge from the slow-ripening 2008 vintage. Delicious now but will last another two years with no loss of fruit. Lovely. Scores 24/30 for a Chambolle.
