Richebourg Grand Cru 2003, Mongeard-Mugneret
The sixth wine in a blind tasting, this is a bottle I picked up at Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret several years ago when I was a frequent visitor. How will one of the greatest lieu-dit in Burgundy express itself in a non-classic vintage? A thick colour. Immediate nose of plum, double plum, fresh fig and blueberry pancake. Sweet, vanilla, this is volatile and variable. There is an intensity there but it comes and goes. A glorious full nose. Thick black fruits on the palate with over-ripe aspects but not cooked in anyway. Tasted blind there was more thrill factor from the Clos de Vougeot 2006 and the Bonnes Mares 2000. Scores 26 / 30 for a Richebourg.
