Vougeot 1er Cru "Clos du Prieuré" Monopole 1999, Domaine de la Vougeraie
This bottle was procured from the domaine many years ago on a fateful tasting trip with brothers Bevan and Broadhurst when I suffered from food poisoning after eating a ham salad at the cafe in Gevrey. The Domaine de la Vougeraie is hard to find but it smells of quality. The "robe" is consistent and satisfyingly rich, the nose starts on blood orange, raspberry and rhubarb, then evolves to a gamey and barnyardy nose, ending on something distinctly meaty. There is a fine texture to this wine, vin digeste, subtle, long and fine. Two tasters spotted this as a 1999 which is better than the odds that a monkey would get throwing darts at numbers. Scores 26 / 30 for a Vougeot 1er Cru.
