Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru "Ile des Vergelesses" 2004, Rollin Père & Fils

The unsung village of Pernand can produce some enjoyable, angular sometimes severe wines because of the granitic soil. Only gifted wine-makers can squeeze quality out of the poor, sunshine-starved terroir. This Pernand 1er cru hails from the best quality lieu-dit towards Savigny. Solid cherry colour, gently plum and cherry fruit on the nose. There is good balance, freshness, integrated cherry and raspberry fruit. This is an honest wine there are no fireworks. Tells the story of the troubled 2004 vintage. Yet this clearly shows a superb commitment to quality in the vineyard and in the table de tri. Scores 20 / 30 for a Pernand 1er Cru. But no complaints given this is the toughest vintage since 1987.
