Chevalier-Montrachet 1999, Jacques Prieur

Surprisingly this is the first Chevalier tasting note on Burgoblog. I tried my first Chevalier-Montrachet at the Chartron & Trebuchet from the barrel in February 1993. Since then I have always been a fan of the power, glory and crucially the minerality of Chevalier. In July 2009 we were treated to a horizontal tasting at  Etienne Sauzet and the tasters voted for the Chevalier over the Montrachet. Tasted at an annual pre-Christmas dinner at Bibendum this Chevalier confirmed my appreciation of the grand cru lieu-dit. The nose was open, potent, unctuous... candied orange, honey, marzipan, stollen, opulent, suggestions of pistachio and icing sugar. This marvellous bouquet continued for 4 hours -- remarkable longevity due no doubt to low yields. This superb, luxury wine offers broad apricot, mandarin and pear fruit. Evolved, integrated and savoury. Impressive staying power and was never anything but glorious. Scores 27/30 for a Chevalier-Montrachet.
