Bourgogne 2007, Bitouzet-Prieur

This bottle was rescued from the depths of my badly arranged Puligny cellar as I conducted a sweep of 2007s which I fear will not improve much especially at this regional level. Lovely ruby colour, good cloying legs. Initial nose of red currant jelly (Fortnum & Mason), aniseed, chalk and raspberry. Pleasant berry flavour. Medium-light body. Fresh and with savoury undertones. A little tangy on the finish. Lacks any real depth or concentration. After 20 minutes the nose evolves to a whiff of prune-hole. Sousbois. Enjoyable and at the peak of its powers. Scores 21-22 for a Bourgogne rouge, held back primarily by the lightness of the 2007 vintage.
