Volnay 1er Cru "Champans" 2009, Jacques Prieur

Another wine tasted at the domaine in April 2012, the "Champans" lieu dit is on a relatively steep part of the golden slope and the Domaine Jacques Prieur owns a plot of 0.35 hectares. The grapes were totally destemmed in 2009, the wine was left on the skins for 19 days in temperature-controlled oak (not stainless steel) vats. Like most Volnays this is grown on a clay soil with high iron content but due to the limestone sub-soil and good drainage the wines tend towards elegance. This Volnay-Champans 2009 starts on notes of griotte and blood orange conjuring images of the iron-tinged soil. The second nose broades into raspberries, ripe red currants and gooseberry jelly or quince jelly. Imbibed, this magical 2009 Volnay premier cru offers impressively ripe berry fruits, freshness, a bright personality with a savoury finish. Excellent contrast with the riper Volnay-Santenots 2009. Burgoblog scores this as 24-26/30 for a Volnay 1er Cru. The elegance! The energy! The personality of the wine-maker!
