Moulin-à-Vent "Le Clos" 2010, Jacques Prieur

With the price of vineyards in the major villages of the Côte d'Or hitting sky-high levels per ouvrée even the top domaines are now investing in the best located vines in the Mâconnais. During the April 2012 tasting trip we noticed that both Thibault Liger-Belair and the Domaine Jacques Prieur were offering compelling Moulin-à-Vent. This gamay wine starts on a vanilla nose, with strawberry and cassis notes ending on a distinct aniseed aroma. RObust, cassis flavours, with chewy tannins. A butch figure. Will be more approachable in 2 years time. The domaine owns a hectare of vines that are planted under the Moulin itself. Aged in barrels of which 10% are new oak and the rest 2 year old. The soil is a combination of granite, quartz and sandy top soil. This scores 21-23 / 30 for a Moulin-à-Vent. Photo shows the team in the cuverie in Meursault.
