Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru "Clos de l'Arlot" 2010 Monopole, Domaine de l'Arlot

This Monopole 1er Cru pinot is the pièce de résistance from the Domaine de l'Arlot. The vines are planted on a terroir with a lower stratum of white chalk (marnes blanches) not hard limestone like most other NSG. This accounts for the wine's distinct identity. Floral, violets, roses, sweet thyme. A really suave and impressive bouquet. Very concentrated, multi-layered fruit, great impact without toughness. Vinified in 50% new oak barrels. The Domaine buys its own wood, ages it and decides on the level of toast (la chauffe); an element of control that I have noticed is increasingly common in top domaines. This NSG 1er Cru scores 24-27 / 30 for the NSG 1er Cru appellation. Therefore, top rank. Photo shows the vineyard from the terrace at the back of the domaine.
