Volnay 1er Cru "Clos des Chênes" 2007, Bitouzet-Prieur

This 13 hectare domaine has a wonderful range of Volnay premiers crus as well as Beaune, Meursault and Puligny. All thirsts can be quenched chez Bitouzet-Prieur. I tasted this Volnay Clos des Chênes 2007 in July 2009 a few months after bottling and it was closed but with a lot of promise. The Clos des Chênes 2000 turned out to be a very potent, unguent, worrisome spectacular. The 2007 even now felt like a rugby forward trying to score a try. Real power but still lumbering onwards. Lovely thick cherry red colour with ruby tints. Deep, plummy nose. Depth. Doesn't really leap out. Rather lingers. A dose of aniseed. Ripe, sombre. Aromas feel heavy. Fresh, raw and earthy. Excellent structure, ripe, plums, ripe tannins. Needs at least 2 more years. Right now this scores 22/30 for a Volnay 1er Cru. Shows promise so could reach 25/30 in 2-3 years time.
