Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru 2008, Denis Mortet

The Denis Mortet domaine extends over 10 hectares on the Côtes-de-Nuits and is regarded as a high quality benchmark. I found this Gevrey 1er Cru strangely disappointing. On the nose it is very ripe, think blackberry jam, it seems heavily extracted on the palate with the sort of heavy, abundant, autumnal fruit I associate with Portuguese wines from the Algarve. The sensation is soft, dry and structureless due to the massive layering of fruits. Almost like a 2003. Hmmmm. Courtesy of the Justerini & Brooks annual Burgundy tasting.
