Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "Chalumeaux" 2007, Martelet de Cherisey
Courtesy of the Justerini & Brooks Burgundy 2007 tasting. This domaine emerged in the 2000 vintage having previously sold its grapes to Maison Louis Latour. Always good to see a family domaine escaping from the clutches of a big anonymous négoçiant. The owner of the domaine, Hélène Martelet is the grand-daughter of the late Comtesse Montlivault. The domaine picked on September 17th -- as late as virtually any chardonnay was picked in 2007 -- resulting in a big ripe fruit and buttery style that verges on blousy. This is an open, broad, giving, rounded and fruity wine. More Versailles rather than the Louvre. Not my style but will please fans of bigger wines.
