Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru "Les Chaignots" 1999, Robert Chevillon

Like most of the Burgundies featured on this blog I got my pinot-tinted finger nails onto this bottle at the domaine in Nuits-Saint-Georges. When I was handed "le tarif" I was struck that the domaine Robert Chevillon pretty much only vinifies Nuits-Saint-Georges. No dabbling in the Côte-de-Beaune or God-forbid white wines! The Cambridge Bufties were wowed by this wine. Bright and sweet red currant, raspberry and morello cherry on the nose with a halo of cinnamon, dried trompette mushrooms and an inkling of white truffle oil. Delectable finesse on the palate (perhaps not typical for NSG in a robust year like 1999) created by the unfermented fruit sweetness balanced by fresh acidity and a good hit of tannins. Frankly a class above the the NSG 1999 from Jacques Cacheux tasted at the same lunch. Classy wine-making.

    Just opened one on March 21st, 2009: The only taste it got was cork. Ended in the washbasin after three sips (we kept it for two hours just in case).

    That's too bad. Robert Chevillon's wines are some of the best structured in NSG. Don't blame the wine-maker on this one!
