Santenay 1er Cru "Beaurepaire" 2005, Mestre Pere & Fils

We tasted at this domaine in September 2007 and enjoyed the whites, less so the reds. This premier cru Santenay blanc is something of a rarity for the village which favours pinots. Bright, metallic yellow colour and thick legs. Heavy honeydew melon, apricot stone and victoria plum aromas without too much oak showing. On the palate this is startling in how savoury it is versus the typical heavy fruits of 2005. Hints of the resins that one gets in Hautes-Cotes wines. Really needs a poussin as a companion. Could improve significantly in a couple of years since it has plenty of oomph. Puzzling.
