Gevrey-Chambertin "Clos Village" 2001, Domaine Heresztyn
Domaine Heresztyn makes a wide range of Gevrey and Morey wines up to grand cru status. Having tasted at the domaine for 5 consecutive years I have built up confidence in the quality. When buying it's rarely a case of good or bad and more a case of which style one prefers. The Clos Village is a single vineyard slap bang in the middle of Gevrey itself. The colour of this wine a is rich, transparent cherry. The nose is potent and mature like Sean Connery in The Hunt For Red October. Spicy Tuscan wildboar salami with black pepper, cherry, cinnamon and blood orange. The aromas mingle wonderfully. Really bright acidity, muscular, bonne matière, spicy, plums and cherry. Real Gevrey! This wine achieves the rarely-granted Awfully Good accolade. Why? It is benchmark Gevrey from a village appellation.
