Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 2005, Domaine Heresztyn

Heresztyn is a respected Gevrey producer although their wines are not that easy to find even in the Gevrey-friendly London market. The 2005 vintage was dubbed a classic by the media. "Quite wrong" bemoan the cognoscenti. 2005 is a very ripe vintage with excellent characteristics apart from one: it is not a classic. This Gevrey 2005 represents the vintage perfectly: just 2 years and 8 months after the harvest it is drinking well, full of ripe cherry and plum fruit. Potent on the palate and dominated by fruit. The balance is tilted towards the sugars and fruit, rather than acidity and tannins, so unlikely to develop savoury and sophisticated characteristics. Excellent match with steak fiorentina or chateaubriand.
