Back in June we tasted a
Beaune 1er Cru 2004 from Tollot-Beaut which was greatly appreciated in a blind tasting. This time we tried a half-bottle of their Chorey 2005 at a restaurant called Hunan which has the twin distinction of serving delicious Taiwanese dishes accompanied by a very well chosen wine list suitable for the food. The fruit on Chorey village wines can sometimes be a bit thin and the style heavy but this Tollot-Beaut offering sails through these problems. Colour and nose dominated by cherries and wild strawberries that crescendo into a baked cherry tart with an element of almond. The ripe cherry fruit and saturated tannins create a satin texture on the palate and a surprisingly rich wine. This glossy sensation combined with a kick of acidity matched well to the giant crab in a spicy black bean sauce. This is too good to be a typical Chorey! This qualifies as
Not Bad At All. Thanks to the sommelier Michael who handed me a bottle of Felton Road as we left the restaurant -- is this a hint to broaden my pinot horizons?
