Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru "Les Vergelesses" 2005, Jean-Jacques Girard
Tasted at the recently opened Planet Of The Grapes wine bar off Leadenhall Market in the City. (Thanks to Sam for posing with the bottle). We liked the format: a wide selection of retail price wines + £10 to imbibe the bottle in the bar. All we needed was more cheese, more charcuterie and more baguettes!
This Pernand was a delicate number with fragrant red berry aromas and a swirling chalkiness on the nose reminiscent of a sea shell-covered beach. Less ripe fruit than you might expect from a 2005 and distinctly raspberry and redcurrant rather than cassis or blackberry. Good balance, fairly gentle on the palate. Needs 2 more years to open out and gain weight. Didn't have the level of concentration of the Pernand Les Vergelesses 2004 from Domaine Rollin tasted in Burgundy in September. Nick and Peter look quite fine... at the start of the evening.
