Saint-Aubin 1er Cru "Les Charmois" 2005, Michel Picard

Competent but not terribly interesting is how I describe this style of nouveau negociant wine which owes slightly too much to the lab and slightly too little to the spirit. Produced by Michel Picard who owns the Chateau de Chassagne-Montrachet which is one of the largest domaines in the Cote d'Or. A full red colour announces a typical red and black currant nose with plenty of background Alliers oak. Lapping round the sides of this core fruit aroma comes an unexpected rhubarby green edge - quite unlike other ripe fruit-driven 2005s. Good balance on the palate but a tad too much green grip compared to the mid-weight loganberry fruit. This should become denser in 2 years time but compared to other red 2005s it doesn't promise anything remarkable. Try harder.
