Corton Grand Cru "Les Grandes Lolieres" 2005, Capitain-Gagnerot

This wine bowled me over. The thick red colour announces a spicy, nutmeg and licorice first nose. After closing up for a while as if to make the audience beg for more the nose evolves to cassis and the beginnings of gamey aromas -- venison in particular. This grand cru pinot is concentrated and potent on the palate with excellent ripe cassis fruit, rounded tannins and real finesse. Part of the secret is the 70 year old vines which produce smaller more concentrated pinot berries than younger vines. Full tannins but they are wrapped in the rich berry fruit. Will peak in 2012 to 2015. A real triumph. The photo shows M. Capitain.
