Fixin 2003, Mongeard-Mugneret

The colour is a thick cherry red which is semi-opaque rather than reflective. First nose of roast plums, toasty oak, and black cherries. Develops to a sun-dried tomato aroma. On the palate the tannins are saturated with black cherry fruit. Medium acidity, some astringency and a toasted oak / encrusted roast plum juice finish. This Fixin is not long -- they rarely are -- but it has good dark stone fruit weight on the back palate. The balance, as with many 2003s, is slightly off due to the ripe fruits and lack of acidity. Without the acidity, the structure is evolving outwards rather than integrating. A flavoursome Fixin which has more style than the normal rustic experience from this north Cote de Nuits vineyard. After all Mongeard-Mugneret are a great Cote de Nuits specialist. Definitely to be consumed now.

Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret is one of the largest family-owned domaines on the Cote de Nuits with 30 hectares of vineyards in 33 different appellations.
