Gevrey-Chambertin 1999, Drouhin-Laroze

This Gevrey is a medium to dark red in colour with an orange rim. Initially the aromas are faint, suggesting ripe plums. After 10 minutes in the glass the wine evolves to Beijing duck, black cherry, plum and a sprinkling of nutmeg; the aromas then close up for a few minutes before opening out again to finish on a gentle rumtopf and crushed clematis petals. On the palate this wine exhibits excellent balance combining fresh acidity, superb ripe plum and black cherry fruit, with a hint of spice. The finish is savoury with scrapings of damp limestone.
