Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru “Champonnet” 2015, Domaine des Varoilles

This was a very good Gevrey 1er Cru which was very representative of the powerful 2015 vintage. Black cherry, aubergine and wine-poached pear nose. Chunky tannins but freshness on the top of the tongue. Big structure with medium plus tannins that currently mask the ripe red tree fruit. Exhibits some typical Gevrey spice and black pepper. Needs three years to fully unfurl its glory. Scores 80-85/100. We shared the tasting with one of the actors (pictured) from the BBC radio show ‘The Archers’ who had a slight whiff of apple cider about him.
