Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru "Petite-Chapelle" 2011, Rossignol Trapet

Tasted courtesy of the Corney & Barrow annual Burgundy tasting at the Tower of London, this 1er Cru Gevrey from Rossignol-Trapet is a significant step up in price from the Beaune 1er Cru and the Gevrey VV. The domaine owns half a hectare of vines planted in 1986. This Petite-Chapelle was tough to taste young since it heralds from a terroir with a cold, clay soil resulting in wines with more tannin that can be austere when young. Aromas of ripe red currant, black currant, good depth to the nose. Great mix of fruit, fresh, cherry, savoury. Lacks ripeness and fat. Points to risky bets on the Côte de Nuits in 2011. Scores 18-21 / 30 for a Gevrey 1er Cru. Photo shows pinot grapes in Gevrey on July 29, 2011 about 1 month before the harvest.
