Corton Renardes Grand Cru 2000, Francois Gay

This is a relatively small domaine based in Chorey-lès-Beaune which is now managed by François' son Pascal. I tasted there many moons ago and this is one of the few remaining bottles bought for a friend. The Savigny 1er Cru 2000 tasted really well in 2007 and 2008. What hope for a 12 year old Corton? This grand cru had us on the edges of our seats at Bibendum as soon as the first waft of aromas swirled its way onto our taste buds. Prunes, grilled cherries, rye bread, blood orange, volatile acidity, it is medicinal-fennely. Reminiscent of the undergrowth at St George's Hill golf course, commented Burgoblog contributor Steve. Good fruit initially, red fruits, good ripeness, just starting to dry out but was superb with a breast of pheasant. Scores 23 / 30 for a Corton grand cru.
