Volnay 1er Cru "Santenots" 2009, Jacques Prieur

This Volnay-Santenots is produced from relatively young vines, planted in 1997 in the domaine's Clos des Santenots. This is what is known as "un vin intra-parcellaire" and what's more, if the domaine planted this with chardonnay then they could call it Meursault. In fact, the domaine does make a Meursault-Santenots blanc. Mais bien sur! This 2009 red Volnay-Santenots is very aromatic (suggesting vendanges entières), followed by a whoosh of back cherries and slightly jammified strawberries. After a few minutes there are seductive notes of blue berry and violet. And this luxurious experience continues on the palate with excellent fruit depth, good concentration, sweetness, ripeness and happily an underlying filament of blood orange which lifts the finish. Given that this is produced in a sun-soaked vineyard the domaine did a great job of picking early to avoid over-ripeness -- there are no hints of dates or aubergine. Scores 20-22/30 for a Volnay 1er Cru. Photo shows a dream sequence from the play "La Grande Histoire des Dégustations Bourguignonnes".
