More confirmation that Gevrey vieilles vignes and Domaine Heresztyn are a sure bet for full spicy pinot. Tasted blind we found this the most appealing of the trio of 1999, 2000 and 2001. Classic pinot berry aromas mixed with vanilla, cinnamon and cloves. Charming balance on the palate with the purity of pinot that keeps the palate alive for the next glass... and the next glass. The quality of this 2001 and dozens of others I have tasted illustrates yet again the madness of the vintage ratings in the Guide Hachette. 2001 is rated as 13/20. But the disastrous vintage of 2003 gets 17/20. Never pre-judge a vintage!
