Santenay 1er Cru "Les Beauregards" 2001, Domaine Borgeot

Santenay is the penultimate village on the Côte d'Or sandwiched between Chassagne and the Maranges appellations. I generally find the wines solid and tasty. Elegance and complexity are hard to come by. This Santenary 1er cru is an interesting little number. The colour is a translucent strawberry juice. Evolved aromas of iodine, dried Hokkaido seaweed, licorice, red currant and blood orange with a hint of slightly sour plum. Fresh and tangy rhubarb and cherry fruit with a slightly sour finish. The flavours are well melded and persistent. Almost like a Barolo in terms of the sharpness and sour cherry. Would be great with canard à l'orange or pheasant cooked with juniper berries. This 2001 is fully mature and suggests other mid-ranking 2001 red premier crus are ready for drinking.
