Chablis 1er Cru "Mont de Milieu" 2006, Billaud-Simon
A few years ago I tasted at the Billaud-Simon domaine after having just 4 hours sleep. The wines were so good I was quickly brought to my senses. A few months later, we tasted 6 of the wines blind (2 Chablis villages, 2 1er crus and 2 grand crus) and many people preferred the 1er crus at the time. This Mont de Milieu 2006, although young, already offered the delicious combination of lemony fruit, limestone minerality and fresh acidity that is the trademark of good Chablis. Also a slight creaminess on the nose. Tasted at the excellent Taiwanese restaurant Hunana at the end of a 5 hour 16 course banquet with lobster noodles it was the perfect wine to refresh and contrast with the slightly spicy lobster claw flesh. Hardly ideal tasting conditions so we were impressed that it still made an impact.
