Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru "Clos St Jacques" 2006, Bruno Clair

The Clos St Jacques vineyard sits above the village of Gevrey towards the combe that leads to the Hautes-Côtes-de-Nuits. Its a famous vineyard and has an astonishingly high price to match. The last tasting I had at the Bruno Clair domaine was in May 2005 and M. Clair was being very clear about the superiority of the French rugby team. Two years later, happily England beat France 14-9 in Paris in the World Cup semi-final so a return visit is now due. Vibrant and reflective ruby red colour, superb freshness, fruit-driven dominated by cherries, very tannic on the palate counter-balanced by perfect fruit ripeness and apparently low acidity. This is restrained and in its box at the moment. Requires tasting in late 2008 to fully understand. Certainly not good for an apero! The domaine's Morey 2003 and Marsannay 2003 were good.
